How does the free trial work?
A free trial of FretGenius Pro starts when you install the app, so you can try everything before you decide. If you do not want to continue, cancel at least a day before the trial ends and you will not be charged. The free features, including every lesson, keep working after you cancel.
Are the lessons free?
Yes. Every lesson in the Note Path and the Interval Path is free, just like Note Finder, Name That Note and Play Along. You keep access to all of them after the free trial ends, with or without a subscription.
Is the Mic Note Trainer free?
No. The Mic Note Trainer is part of FretGenius Pro. You can try it for free during the trial.
Will I be reminded before I am charged?
Yes. Google Play sends an email before your trial ends, with an option to cancel. The App Store sends notifications too. FretGenius can also send its own reminder if you turn on trial reminders in the app.
How do I cancel the trial or subscription?
- Android: open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, FretGenius, Cancel subscription.
- iPhone and iPad: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, FretGenius, Cancel Subscription.
On Android you can also cancel from the reminder email that Google Play sends.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. Contact [email protected] and we will sort it out.
Was FretGenius free before? What changed?
In February 2026 we introduced subscriptions. Every feature that was free before that date is still free. The new features we added since then are part of FretGenius Pro.
Is there a free web version?
Yes. If you only want on-screen quizzes and the heatmap, use our browser site fretboardquiz.com. To practice with your real guitar or use Play Along, Daily Coach and the learning paths, install FretGenius.
About FretGenius
What does FretGenius teach?
Fretboard fluency. The Note Path builds fast note recall across the whole neck, one phase at a time. The Interval Path teaches the shapes and relationships between notes so you can visualize and navigate the fretboard musically. Daily Coach ties both together with short sessions built around your weak spots.
What is Interval Path?
Interval Path is a guided learning path for fretboard visualization and navigation. It combines short lessons with Interval Finder and microphone-based interval practice, starting from root note positions and building out the shapes around them. The lessons are free. The practice is part of FretGenius Pro.
Is FretGenius suitable for beginners?
Yes. The Note Path starts with the open strings and natural notes and introduces new notes in short, focused steps. You do not need any music theory to begin. When you install the app, a few questions about your playing place you at the right phase for your level.
Is FretGenius useful for advanced players?
Yes. Even experienced players usually have slow spots on the fretboard. FretGenius finds them and helps you speed them up. The Interval Path also teaches interval shapes that most players never practice deliberately. Its lessons are free, and its practice is part of FretGenius Pro.
Do I need a guitar for every activity?
No. Note Finder, Name That Note, Interval Finder, Scale Explorer, the Heatmap and the lessons all work on screen. The microphone trainers and Play Along use your real guitar.
Which instruments and tunings are supported?
The learning paths support guitar in standard tuning for now. The standalone microphone trainers for notes and intervals (Pro) show only the note name or the interval and accept it in any octave, so they also work with bass, ukulele and other stringed instruments.
Why choose FretGenius over other fretboard apps?
We compared FretGenius with the popular fretboard trainers feature by feature. Read the comparison to see where it stands out.
Getting started and progress
How do I get started?
Install FretGenius and answer a few questions about your playing. We start you at the right phase for your level. Then practice, and unlock the next phases by answering quickly and accurately.
How do I unlock the next phase?
In the Note Path you need 95% accuracy over many answers (or your first 35 answers correct in a row) and a median answer time under 2 seconds. If you do not miss, that is about 2 minutes of practice per phase. Fast and accurate players can unlock the whole Note Path in about 30 minutes.
Do I have to wait between phases? Can I go back?
No waiting, and yes, you can go back. Since FretGenius 2.0 you move on as soon as you pass a phase, and you can practice any phase you have unlocked whenever you want. To help you remember what you have learned, Daily Coach (Pro) brings back reviews of earlier phases automatically.
Can I see my overall progress?
Yes. The home screen shows the full Note Path and Interval Path, including the phases you have not unlocked yet. The Heatmap shows how fast you are on every note across the neck.
How do I reset my progress?
Tap the Settings button in the top-right corner and choose Start Note Path over.
Notes, octaves and weak spots
Does the app focus on my weak notes?
Yes. Daily Coach (Pro) finds your weak spots across the whole fretboard and has you practice them. The Heatmap shows the same information at a glance.
What happens after I finish the Note Path?
You keep improving:
- Daily Coach (Pro) keeps targeting your slowest notes.
- Interval Path teaches you the shapes that start from root note positions. Its lessons are free, and its practice is part of Pro.
Can I practice specific strings or octaves with the microphone?
Yes. Go to Tools, then Mic Note Trainer (Pro) to practice outside your current phase.
Can I practice finding every position of a note (octaves and unisons)?
Yes. That is exactly what the Interval Path is for. It starts with unisons and octaves and builds the other intervals from there. The lessons are free, and the practice is part of FretGenius Pro.
Microphone and note detection
The app is not detecting my notes correctly. What can I do?
- Practice in a quiet room.
- Put your phone's microphone close to the guitar or amp.
- Play one note at a time, not chords.
- Turn on Guidance to see exactly where to play each note on the fretboard. When the app accepts any octave, the easiest choice is the open strings (E A D G B e).
Does the microphone work with an electric guitar?
Yes. An unplugged electric guitar is quiet, though, so the microphone picks up more background noise. Practice in a quiet room with your phone very close to the guitar. An amp helps too.
Does the microphone work with bass or other instruments?
The microphone trainers for notes and intervals (Pro) accept a note in any octave, so they work with bass and other stringed instruments. The guided learning paths are guitar-only in standard tuning for now.
